OCT. 1, 2012 — Georgia’s opposition coalition stand of the brink of winning a bitterly fought parliamentary election
STORY — Exit polls from Georgia’s parliamentary election suggest that the party of billionaire opposition leader Bidzina Ivalishvili, Georgian Dream, may be on course to squeeze a surprise win.
A win for Georgian Dream over United National Movement, the party of President Mikheil Saakashvili, in this tightly contested and often bitter context would be a genuine upset. It would also mark the first defeat in an election for the group of politicians lead by Mr Saakashvili who came to power after the 2003 Rose Revolution.
The FT quoted a poll for Georgian state television which put Georgian Dream ahead with 50% of the vote and United National Movement on 41%.
Exit polls in elections in Georgia have previously been wrong and the result could swing back towards the United National Movement. A stronger indication of the final result is expected in the early hours of Oct. 2.
