Tajikistan boosts cooperation with Iran

OCT. 3 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) — The Iranian and Tajik energy ministers endorsed a memorandum of understanding on improving cooperation between the two countries on a range of issues from industry to social affairs, Iran’s Fars news agency reported. Iran and Tajikistan have worked on improving ties through the year.

Jury trials begin in Georgia

OCT. 1 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) — Georgia introduced the possibility of juries in Tbilisi courts for trials of aggravated homicide. News reports said this will be the first time in the South Caucasus juries are used. If the prosecution and defence agree they can select a judge-led trial instead.

Bribe case opens against Kazakh health min

SEPT. 29 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) — Kazakh financial police started an investigation into health minister Zhaksylyk Doskaliyev for abuse of office but a court refused to approve an arrest warrant for him saying that he was too unwell. The financial police said Mr Doskaliyev had faked a heart attack.

Turkmenistan builds an Olympic city

SEPT. 4 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) — Turkmenistan announced plans to construct a $1.9b Olympic city to be built by the Turkish company Polimeks Construction. The complex will be located next to Ashgabat and will hold 30 sports facilities including a 60,000 seat soccer stadium.
