Kyrgyz police fires tear gas to potesters

OCT. 3 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – Kyrgyz police fired tear gas in Bishkek to disperse about 2,000 people who were calling for the overthrow of the government after it pledged not to nationalise the Kumtor gold mine, media reported. About 200 people tried to climb over a fence surrounding the government’s headquarters in the worst violence in Bishkek since a revolution in 2010.

Tajik Pres. tells to hoard

SEP. 26 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rakhmon has told Tajiks to hoard two years worth of food supplies ahead of winter, media reported. The presidential office quoted Mr Rakhmon as saying that a global rise in commodity prices and a winter that is expected to be harsh, means it is vital to stock up on supplies.

Muslims protest in Azerbaijan

SEP. 17 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – Police in Baku detained 30 protesters marching towards the US embassy to demonstrate against an anti-Islamic film that has angered many Muslims, media reported. The police blocked the protest, which reporters estimated attracted 100 people, before it reached the embassy.

Tajiks protest over market fire

SEP. 6 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – In a rare outpouring of public anger, hundreds of people in Dushanbe protested against the slow official response to a fire that had burnt through a large market a day earlier. The crowd marched towards the centre of the city and only broke up after meeting Dushanbe’s mayor.

Military leaves Tajik city

AUG. 24 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – Government forces began leaving Khorog, southeast Tajikistan, one month after they moved into the town, media reported. The military started to pack up after hundreds of people protested at their presence. Soldiers had moved into Khorog in July to capture a rebel commander accused of killing a security officer.

Violence rises in Tajikistan

AUG. 22 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – Soldiers in the town of Khorog, south-east Tajikistan, opened fire on a crowd demonstrating against the murder of a local opposition commander, lightly injuring several people, media reported. The shooting raises tension in the region a few weeks after government soldiers and rebel forces fought a battle that killed around 50 people.

Olympic results for Central Asia and S.Caucasus

AUG. 17 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – At the Olympic Games in London, Kazakhstan wanted to beat their previous best medals haul of three golds from both Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000. They did, easily, with seven gold medals in cycling, weightlifting, long jump and boxing.

Kazakhstan was placed twelfth in the rankings, with the same gold medal haul as Australia. For the others, the Games were less successful.
Turkmenistan failed to win a medal and one of its boxing referees was sent home after

failing to stop a one-sided fight. An Uzbek gymnast faced even greater humiliation after she was disqualified for doping. Uzbekistan did win one gold medal in the men’s wrestling. There were no golds for either Kyrgyzstan or Tajikistan, although a Tajik woman won a boxing bronze.

Azerbaijan had talked up their boxing hopes before the Games but the best it could manage was a bronze medal. They also had one coach sent home for cheating. In wrestling Azerbaijan won two golds along with another two silver and three bronze medals.

Georgia won its gold medal in judo . Neighbouring Armenia won three medals, but no gold.

German company pulls out of Uzbekistan

AUG. 2 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – Germany’s Daimler has pulled out of proposed bus making joint-venture with Uzbek state company Uzavtosanoat, media reported. A Daimler spokesperson cited tough economic conditions as the reason for pulling out of the deal although the environment for foreign investors in Uzbekistan has also become increasingly difficult.

Georgia complaints to the Olympic Games

JULY 25 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – Georgia has complained to the London Olympic Games for placing the disputed regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in Russia, media reported. On the London 2012 website, the birthplaces of two of Russia’s wrestlers, born in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, were followed by “(Rus)” indicating they are in Russia.

Kazakh court convicts 34 people

JUNE 4 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – A court in western Kazakhstan convicted 34 people of instigating a riot that killed 15 people in the town of Zhanaozen in December. The trial was one of the most politically sensitive in Kazakhstan’s post- Soviet history. Of the 34 people convicted, 13 were sent to prison.
