SOCAR-Fugro joint venture to upgrade Azerbaijan’s refinery

NOV. 11 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) — Azerbaijan’s state-owned energy company SOCAR said its joint venture with Dutch oil and gas services company Fugro will work on the modernisation of a refinery near Baku. SOCAR Fugro will provide geophysical and geotechnical services for the modernisation work. Azerbaijan has earmarked around $1b for reconstruction work on the country’s largest refinery.

Air Liquide and Kazakh refineries cooperate

NOV. 5 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) — French company Air Liquide will form a joint venture with Kazakhstan’s state-owned Kazmunaigas to increase production of industrial gases at the country’s refineries. The agreement, signed during President Nursultan Nazarbayev’s visit to France, will improve the performance of Kazakhstan’s three refineries at Atyrau, Pavlodar and Shymkent.

UOP to work on Azerbaijan’s refinery

NOV. 3 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) — US-based UOP signed a contract to provide technology and licensing for new units to be built at the Heydar Aliyev oil refinery near Baku. UOP is a subsidiary of Honeywell International. SOCAR, Azerbaijan’s state-owned energy company, has been looking for partners to modernise the country’s most important refinery. Azerbaijan needs to produce more petrol to hit growing demand.

Azerbaijan’s SOCAR signs contract with France’s Axens

OCT. 28 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) — Azerbaijan’s state-owned energy company SOCAR signed a contract with French industrial group Axens to build new units at the Heydar Aliyev refinery near Baku. This is part of a $16.5b project to modernise the Baku refinery and boost production of petroleum products. Axens will build new diesel fuel and gas hydro-treating units at the refinery.

Iran, China and Kazakhstan to build refinery

OCT. 17 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) — Iran and China are ready to help build Kazakhstan’s fourth oil refinery, Raymbek Amirzhanov, vice governor of the Mangistau region in north- western Kazakhstan, told media. Kazakhstan has repeatedly said it needs a fourth refinery to end its dependence on Russian petroleum products. Iran and China have said they will buy more oil from Kazakhstan through a swap system.

Iran to develop trade with Tajikistan

JUNE 22 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) – Iran plans to export more refined gas products to Tajikistan and Armenia, Iranian media quoted a senior official at the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company as saying.

Refinery investment needs Azerbaijani oil company

JUNE 8 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) – SOCAR, Azerbaijan’s state oil and gas company, said it wanted to invest $1.2b upgrading its oil refinery in Baku. Officials in Azerbaijan have been saying for several months that they want to increase their capacity for producing high-grade oil-products.

Kazakhstan to boost petrol production

JUNE 3 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) – Kazakhstan plans to produce the higher grade AI-92 and AI-95 petrol at a refinery in the north of the country, media reported quoting the Kazakh Development Bank. Kazakhstan has a shortage of refined oil products.

Uzbekistan to start gas refining

MAY 13 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) – Shokir Fayzullayev, head of Uzbekneftegaz, the Uzbek oil and gas company, said Uzbekistan intends to start an $18.65b investment project that will re-orientate its strategy for gas towards refining it rather than exporting it. Mr Fayzullayev said Uzbekistan wanted to add more value to its gas production.

China to build refinery in Kazakhstan

APRIL 2 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) – Chinese company CITIC has agreed to build a vital fourth Kazakh oil refinery in Aktau, Forbes Kazakhstan reported. The deal was arranged during a trip last month to China by Kazakh PM Karim Massimov. The project should cost around $6b and will be completed within 5 years.
