Georgia cuts freight railway price

JULY 1 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) – Georgia’s railway network said it would cut the cost of freight across its network by 20% to try and boost traffic, media reported. Georgia is an important link between Europe and Asia but freight traffic on its railway has dropped slightly this year.

Kazakhstan building new Caspian Sea terminal

JUNE 3 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) – Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, the national railway company, is building a new ferry terminal on the Caspian Sea, media reported.The terminal, at Kuryk south of Aktau, should be operational by December 2016 and highlights Kazakhstan’s drive to boost its trade across the Caspian Sea.

Double-decker trains operate in Azerbaijan

MAY 18 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) – Swiss railway rolling stock manufacturer Stadler has won a 70m euro contract to deliver five double decker carriages to Azerbaijan’s railway company, media reported. The first two carriages will be put into operation ahead of the European Games in Baku next month.

Kazakh city plans light railway

MAY 16 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) – China Railway Group has signed a deal with the Kazakh government to build a light railway network around Astana ahead of the city’s high-profile EXPO- 2017, media reported. The light railway will be 22km long and have 18 stations. Kazakhstan is spending heavily on EXPO-2017.

EBRD gives loan to Kazakhstan’s Temir Zholy

APRIL 13 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) – The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has agreed to give Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, the Kazakh national rail company, a loan of $200m to restructure its debt, media reported. Temir Zholy has been upgrading rapidly over the past few years.

Kazakh corruption allegations in France

MARCH 19 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) – Prosecutors in France have charged Jean-Francois Etienne des Rosaies, an ex-presidential adviser, with corruption over a 2010 deal to sell 295 trains and 45 helicopters to Kazakhstan, AFP reported. Media said he was the fourth person to be charged in connection with the deal.

Uzbekistan agrees to maintain Afghan railway

MARCH 21 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) – Uzbekistan has signed a three year extension to a contract with Afghanistan to maintain the 75km railway from Hairstan, on the Uzbek-Afghan border, to Mazar-i-Sharif, media reported. Reports said the contract was worth $19m/year to Uzbekistan. This is a rare Uzbek service export.

World Bank supports Uzbek railway

FEB. 17 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) — The World Bank agreed a $195m loan to Uzbekistan for a railway project that will speed up trade with China, media reported. The $1.6b project in the eastern Ferghana Valley will also bypass a Soviet-built section of railway that passes through Tajikistan.
