Kyrgyzstan resumes pressure on Centerra

JAN. 28 2013 (The Conway Bulletin) – Kyrgyzstan’s government resumed pressure on Centerra Gold, the Canadian mining company that owns the Kumtor mine which accounts for about 12% of the country’s economy, for more cash. Economy minister Temir Sariyev said that an agreement signed with the previous government in 2009 was “murky” and may be torn up.

JAN. 21 2013 (The Conway Bulletin) – Villages in southern Kyrgyzstan are experiencing food shortages after Uzbekistan shut checkpoints running through its enclave of Sokh following rioting on Jan. 5/6, media reported. The checkpoints guard the only road linking villages in Kyrgyzstan’s impoverished Batken province to the rest of the country.

US pays $200m for Kyrgyzstan’s Manas

JAN. 17 2013 (The Conway Bulletin) – The US paid Kyrgyzstan $200m last year for use of an airbase outside Bishkek to support their military in Afghanistan, US assistant secretary for Central Asia Robert Blake told media in Bishkek. The US rental fee makes the Manas airbase one of Kyrgyzstan’s biggest foreign income earners.

The three countries dispute various borders in the Ferghana Valley.
