Norwegian energy company pulls out of Kazakhstan

FEB. 20 2013 (The Conway Bulletin) – Norwegian energy giant Statoil confirmed that it had pulled out of the Abay oil prospect in the Kazakh sector of the Caspian Sea, media reported. A Statoil spokesman said that a technical and commercial evaluation of the project had triggered the withdrawal.

Kazakhstan and Toyota announces a deal

FEB. 13 2013 (The Conway Bulletin) – Car manufacturer Toyota and the Kazakh government announced a deal for the Japanese company to produce 3,000 Fortuner 4x4s a year in Kazakhstan. Kazakh company, Saryarka AvtoProm, will produce the cars. The deal is important as it serves as further proof of Kazakhstan’s economic diversification.

Kazakhstan slips down on media freedom

JAN. 29 2013 (The Conway Bulletin) – Unsurprisingly after a year clamping down on the press, Kazakhstan slipped six places to 160th position in the Reporters Without Borders press freedom index of 179 countries. This placed Kazakhstan next to Rwanda. Uzbekistan also fell seven places to 164th position. Azerbaijan rose six places to 156.
