S. Ossetian fighters detain Georgian man

JUNE 2 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — Fighters linked to the Georgian breakaway region of South Ossetia detained a Georgian man for illegally crossing the border, said Georgia’s government. Akaki Misireli, 65, was sent to a detention centre in Tskhinvali, the capital of the de facto state that was the focus of a brief war between Russia and Georgia in 2008. South Ossetian forces released Mr Misireli later but the incident highlights just how sensitive the border around the breakaway region is.

A group attacks vegan restaurant in Georgia

MAY 31 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — A group of unidentified people threw pork sausages at customers dining at Kiwi, a vegan cafe in Tbilisi, an attack that the owners of the Georgian restaurant attributed to a neo-Nazi group. Police arrived to the scene after the brawl had ended and no arrests were made. Conservative Georgians are opposed to alternative lifestyles and progressive causes espoused by shops like Kiwi.

Georgia’s President vetoes bill

MAY 31 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — Georgia’s President Giorgi Margvelashvili vetoed a bill to change procedures in and the composition of the country’s Constitutional Court, sending back to Parliament the controversial draft law. MPs from the ruling Georgian Dream party said they will not seek to override the veto and will amend the bill to accommodate the demands of the opposition. Critics of the amendments to Constitutional Court had complained that the changes were designed to give the government more power. Mr Margvelashvili has previously blocked legislation put forward by the Georgian Dream coalition government, of which he is a member.

Georgian breakaway region hosts football tournament for unrecognised states

MAY 28 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — The breakaway Georgian region of Abkhazia is hosting a football tournament for regions which are not recognised as countries, a move that some critics have said is provocative.

The 10-day tournament will centre on Sukhumi, the capital of Abkhazia which lies on the Black Sea coast.

Only a handful of countries, including Russia, have recognised Abkhazia as an independent state. Abkhazia and South Ossetia split from Georgia in the early 1990s after the break-up of the Soviet Union, and declared full independence after a Georgia-Russia war in 2008.

And it’s an eclectic bunch of 12 ethnic groups, pseudo-states, wannabe-countries and historical-throwbacks that are competing at the so-called alternative World Cup.

Teams playing in the tournament include Raetia, a former province of the Roman Empire in central Europe, Iraqi Kurdistan and Somaliland.

Abkhazia, which opened with a 9-0 win over the Chagos Islands, is one of the favourites.

Georgia’s city develops

MAY 20 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — House in Alley, a local development company, said it will build a new hotel in Batumi, a resort town on Georgia’s Black Sea coast. The company said the new hotel, which will cost 18m lari ($8.4m), will hold 105 rooms. The new hotel is part of the government-supported project to improve the area around the Heroes Alley in central Batumi. Batumi is Georgia’s top resort town.

Editorial: Georgia’s election

MAY 27 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — Fighting broke out outside a polling station in rural Georgia this week as people prepared to vote in local government by-elections. The fighting was direct and brutal and was also captured by onlookers on their mobile phones.

Videos from the fighting give a clear insight into the vicious divide in Georgian society between those people supporting the Georgian Dream Coalition, bankrolled by billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, and those supporting the United National Movement, the party of former president Mikheil Saakashvili.

Just as Mr Ivanishvili and Mr Saakashvili hate each other, so do supporters of either party. If the parliamentary election of 2012 was considered nasty, it’ll be nothing compared to this year’s issue.

And it is expected to be close. Opinion polls haven’t been able to give any side a clear advantage. They have also introduced the possibility of third party muscling in on the two main rivals.

Expect a bumpy, passionate ride through to October.

Batumi’s other poorer and dislocated side

BATUMI/Georgia, MAY 27 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — With its palm tree-lined boulevards, this city on the Black Sea coast is Georgia’s best known tourist destination.

It has boomed over the past decade and will soon host the world’s sixth largest hotel in the form of the 45-storey Twin Tower.

But there is a darker side.

On the outskirts of Batumi, several thousand people live in dilapidated barracks. Since October 2012, migrants and socially deprived people have been living in an abandoned Russian military base, now one of the biggest shantytowns in Georgia.

Its dwellers call it Ocnebis Kalaki. In English, this means Dream Town. It is a joke, a dark joke.

Water is available for only a few hours a day, there are frequent power cuts, gas is not provided and a rudimental sewage system increases the risk of infections and diseases.

Most of the families live in very small, poorly-built rooms. A family of eight share a two-room shack made out of wood, cement-asbestos, metal sheets and cardboard.

These people live on the fringe of Georgian society.

Georgia accuses Russia of killing man

MAY 20 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — Georgia’s government accused Russian soldiers patrolling along the border of the breakaway region of Abkhazia of shooting dead one of its citizens.

The foreign ministry issued a statement which said that Giga Otkhozoria, 31, had been shot six times while he had been on the Georgian side of the border.

“This criminal act once again demonstrates the highly alarming situation in the occupied region of Abkhazia, Georgia and the full responsibility for it lies with the Russian Federation as it is effectively in control of the region,” Georgia’s foreign ministry said.

Russia denied the allegations.

“The Georgian MFA used this case for its usual propaganda exercise,” the Russian foreign ministry said.

Relations between Georgia and Russia have been improving since Mikheil Saakashvili lost power in Georgia in 2013. Under his presidency, Georgia had fought a brief war with Russia in August 2008 for control of South Ossetia.

Russia defeated Georgia and strengthened its military support to South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Over the last three years, relations between Russia and Georgia have improved although border incidents expose the unease between the two neighbours.

Georgia to receive pipeline fees

MAY 20 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — Georgia’s PM Giorgi Kvirikashvili said that he hopes to receive 1b cubic metres of gas annually as payment in-kind for the transit of Azerbaijani gas through Georgia via the Southern Gas Corridor. Azerbaijan will pump 16b cubic metres of gas through a network of pipelines, called the Southern Gas Corridor, to Europe. The project will be completed in 2019.

Work starts in Georgia on world’s sixth largest hotel

BATUMI/Georgia, MAY 22 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — The Georgian real estate developer Orbi Group said it has started construction work on a $120m hotel in Batumi called the Twin Tower, a sign that tourism and business on Georgia’s Black Sea coast is possibly rebounding.

The two 45-storey towers will hold 4,500 hotel rooms, making it the sixth largest hotel complex in the world when it is completed by the end of next year.

Batumi is Georgia’s main tourist destination and had been the site of mass redevelopment. The previous government of Mikheil Saakashvili had spent heavily improving Batumi but its fortunes had dived after the election of the Georgian Dream coalition government in 2012.

This lack of favour coupled with an economic downturn triggered by low oil prices stalled many of Batumi’s planned projects.
