Fire breaks out near Zhanaozen, Kazakhstan

SEPT. 18 2015 (The Conway Bulletin) – A fire broke out at an oil pit outside Zhanaozen in western Kazakhstan. High winds spread the fire over a 5 square km area. Media said the fire injured 2 people.

Gas blast kills seven in Kazakhstan

NOV. 30 2014 (The Conway Bulletin) – A gas explosion in a block of flats in the city of Taldykorgan in south Kazakhstan killed at least seven people, media reported. Media quoted the emergency services as saying improper use of gas cylinders had caused the explosion. The accident highlights poor infrastructure used in Kazakhstan.

Another fire hits market in Kazakhstan

DEC. 12 2013 (The Conway Bulletin) — Yet another fire has destroyed a market on the outskirts of Almaty, media reported. Reports said this was probably the sixth major fire to destroy a market in Almaty since November. Tension is increasing as the market traders, often poorer Kazakhs and migrants from China, accuse the authorities of not doing enough to protect them.

Fire destroys market in Kazakhstan

NOV. 17 2013 (The Conway Bulletin) — A fire destroyed a large part of the Barakholka market, a scruffy site on the outskirts of Almaty where many poorer Kazakhs and migrants from China work. This is the third fire at Barakholka in the past couple of months. The Kazakh emergencies ministry has said it suspects arson.

Fire damages factory in central Kazakhstan

JUNE 26 2013 (The Conway Bulletin) — A 90m-high chimney at Luxembourg-based ArcelorMittal’s steel factory in the town of Temirtau, central Kazakhstan, was damaged in an accident, media reported. The Temirtau factory is the largest steel making plant in Kazakhstan. There were no casualties in the accident although production will be slowed to repair the damage.

Pipeline blast disables Azerbaijan’s gas pump

OCT. 4 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – An explosion disabled the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline which pumps gas from the Shah Deniz fields in the Azerbaijani section of the Caspian Sea to Turkey, media reported. This is the second explosion in the Turkish part of the BTC pipeline, a route critical for European gas supplies, this year.

Fire hits oil refinery in Kazakhstan

FEB. 6 2012 (The Conway Bulletin) – A fire broke out at one of Kazakhstan’s three oil refineries. Nobody was hurt in the fire at the refinery in Shymkent, near the Uzbek border, and an official said production was not affected. A broken oil pipe, fractured by the cold weather, was blamed for the fire.

Gas pipeline explodes in Kazakhstan

SEPT. 22 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) — Two blasts ruptured a pipeline carrying gas through Kazakhstan to Russia, the Kazakh emergencies ministry said. Nobody was injured in the blasts although gas exports along the route were suspended. It is unclear what caused the blasts and how gas exports to Russia from Central Asia will be affected.

SEPT. 14 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) — Fire fighters in Kazakhstan extinguished forest fires which had threatened to spread to Russia. The fires in northern Kazakhstan had been burning for a week.

Forest fires spread in north Kazakhstan

SEPT. 9 2010 (The Conway Bulletin) — Dry and windy weather fanned forest fires in the Pavlodar region of northern Kazakhstan. The fires killed at least 6 people and spread to Siberia in Russia. Rain is forecast. Russia has fought a series of forest fires this summer which have severely damaged its grain harvest.
