Azerbaijan builds resort in Montenegro

MARCH 6 2014 (The Conway Bulletin) — Azerbaijan has started a 500m euro project to transform an old Yugoslav navy base in Montenegro into a luxury resort. The construction of the resort is controversial because it is being bankrolled by Azerbaijan’s sate-owned oil company and Azmont Investments, a company with close links to the Azerbaijani elite.

ADB approves road project in Azerbaijan

FEB. 23 2014 (The Conway Bulletin) — The Asian Development Bank (ADB) plans to approve a $45m loan next month to finance the reconstruction of road and bridges along the Georgian border, Azerbaijani media reported. The ADB has been instrumental in pushing ahead plans to rebuild Azerbaijan’s Soviet-era infrastructure.

Turkmenistan builds natural gas complex

Construction workers go on strike in Kazakhstan

FEB. 11 2014 (The Conway Bulletin) — Around 700 workers building the 88-storey Abu Dhabi Plaza in Astana went on strike after complaining about their pay, media reported. The Abu Dhabi Tower project was unveiled last year to much fanfare. UAE investors are funding the $1.6b tower which was expected to be finished by 2016.

Thales wins metro contract in Azerbaijan

FEB. 3 2014 (The Conway Bulletin) — French engineering company Thales has won a deal to upgrade equipment on Baku’s metro system, media reported quoting a senior company official. The Azerbaijani government has pledged to update and extend the Baku metro, which dates from the 1960s.

ADB funds rural development in Uzbekistan

OCT. 23 2013 (The Conway Bulletin) — The Manila-based Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $200m loan to help build houses in rural Uzbekistan, media reported. ADB’s loan underscores the need for better housing outside Uzbekistan’s main cities. The loan is part of $500m tranche agreed between ADB and Uzbekistan in 2011.

New fertiliser plant to be built in Kazakhstan

SEPT. 16 2013 (The Conway Bulletin) — As part of a joint Kazakh-Chinese investment programme, construction will begin on a new potash fertiliser plant in western Kazakhstan, Kazakh deputy industry minister Nurlan Sauranbayev said. Mr Sauranbayev said the initial cost of the plant would be about $1b.

Turkmenistan to build Caspian port

AUG. 15 2013 (The Conway Bulletin) — Highlighting its energy wealth, Turkmenistan unveiled plans to build a $2b port on its Caspian Sea coast. Turkmen leader Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov and Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan launched the project. Turkish construction company Gap Insaat will build the port.

Georgia to build first wind farm

JULY 23 2013 (The Conway Bulletin) — Work has begun on building Georgia’s first wind farm, media quoted the Georgian minister for energy, Kakha Kaladze, as saying. Mr Kaladze said a small wind farm capable of producing 20MW of power would be operational in central Georgia by 2014. If the project is a success, more wind farms are planned.
