Turkish cuts flights to Tajik and Kyrgyz cities

NOV. 8 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — Turkish Airlines, Turkey’s flagship carrier, dropped Osh, Kyrgyzstan’s second-largest city, and Khujand, a major city in northern Tajikistan, as destinations in a global revision of its connections. Turkish said it was suspending flights to 22 destinations and making around 30 aircrafts redundant in an effort to focus only on profitable routes.

Russia threatens Tajikistan over flights

NOV. 3 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — Russia could suspend flight connections with Tajikistan next week, if the countries fail to reach an agreement on flights originating from the new Zhukovsky airport in Moscow, TASS quoted unnamed Russian government sources as saying. Tajikistan’s Aviation Committee had refused to grant permission to companies that operated out of Zhukovsky. Delegations from both governments met in Kyrgyzstan to negotiate a deal, but failed to reach an agreement.

Armenian airline to compete with Russian

NOV. 1 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — The newly-established Armenia carrier said it is ready to compete with the low-cost Russian company Pobeda, which started flights linking Armenia to Moscow and Rostov-on-Don. Armenia’s CEO, Robert Hovhannisyan, said that his company will fly from the more central Yerevan airport, which will give the local carrier a competitive advantage on Pobeda, which flies to and from Gyumri, Armenia’s second city. Pobeda is a low-cost subsidiary of Russia’s Aeroflot.

Kazakhstan’s Air Astana expands

NOV. 1 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — Kazakhstan’s flagship carrier Air Astana said it plans to buy 13 new aircrafts due to growing demand. Air Astana will make an offer to buy 11 Airbus and two Boeing planes over the next four years. British BAE Systems owns 49% of Air Astana, while Kazakhstan’s sovereign wealth fund Samruk-Kazyna owns the rest.

Uzbekistan Airways to start flights to London

NOV. 1 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — State-owned Uzbekistan Airways said it will start a short term direct connection to London Heathrow in December. The twice weekly flights will run from Dec. 9 to Dec. 20. This seems to be an attempt to test the feasibility of a renewed and stable connection to Europe’s financial capital, after direct flights became inconstant over the past decade.

Pobeda starts flights to Armenia

OCT. 26 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) — Pobeda, a low-cost subsidiary of Russia’s flagship carrier Aeroflot, confirmed it will start flights to Armenia in the next few weeks. From November, it will fly from Moscow Vnukovo to Gyumri, Armenia’s second airport seven times a week. Earlier this month, Pobeda obtained permission to start Rostov- on-Don to Yerevan flights. Pobeda already flies to Almaty, Baku and Tbilisi.

Flights restart between Turkmenistan and Georgia

OCT. 17 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) – Georgia and Turkmenistan will launch new direct flights in November, linking Tbilisi and Ashgabat. The flights will run twice weekly and will be operated by Turkmenistan Airlines. Since Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili’s visit to Turkmenistan in 2014, relations between the two countries have improved. Now, the governments want to boost trade beyond oil products which dominate.

Kazakhstan Airline to increase flights to China

SEPT. 28 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) – Kazakhstan’s flagship carrier Air Astana plans to increase air links to China and tap Kazakhstan’s potential as a transport hub. Peter Foster, the company’s CEO, said Air Astana aims to transport 1m Chinese tourists and businessmen within three years. To achieve this goal, the company aims to triple from 20 to 60 the flights it operates with China and to hire more Chinese-speaking staff.

Kyrgyzstan’s Air Manas launches flight to China

SEPT. 19 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) – Kyrgyzstan’s Air Manas launched a route from Bishkek to Kashgar, in China’s Xinjiang region, strengthening regional links. Turkish low-cost airline Pegasus owns 49% of Air Manas. The air link to Kashgar will be synchronised with Istanbul-Bishkek connections. The Xinjiang region is synonymous with Uyhgurs. There is a large Uyhgur minotiry living in Bishkek.

Kazakhstan’s Sunkar Air opens flight to Iran

SEPT. 20 2016 (The Conway Bulletin) – Kazakhstan’s Sunkar Air opened a new flight from the Caspian city of Aktau to Gorgan, in northern Iran. Sunkar is a small airline in Kazakhstan. Ties between Kazakhstan and Iran have improved since the lifting of international sanctions against Iran earlier this year.
