Russia sends missiles to Azerbaijan

JUNE 24 2017 (The Bulletin) — Russia has sent a batch of new anti- tank missiles to Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani defence ministry said. It released a video of half a dozen mechanised anti-tank vehicles being unloaded in Baku. Russia has previously been accused of propagating a war between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the disputed region of Nagorno- Karabakh in order to sell more weapons.

Armenia’s Ardshinbank receives EDB loan

JUNE 28 2017 (The Bulletin) — The Almaty-based Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) has loaned Yerevan-based Ardshinbank $20m for a three-year period, media reported. Specifically, the loan is to facilitate import-export deals among member states of the EDB. As well as Armenia, these are Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus and Tajikistan. Other than Tajikistan, they are all members of the Kremlin-lead Eurasian Economic Union.

Armenia to complete power line

JUNE 27 2017 (The Bulletin) — Armenia will complete electricity transmissions lines to Iran and Georgia by the end of 2019, media reported quoting the deputy minister of energy, Hayk Harutyunyan. This is important because one of Armenia’s key export potentials is electricity. It operates the only nuclear power station in the region and has export capacity.

Armenia accepts around 30,000 Syrian refugees

JUNE 26 2017 (The Bulletin) — Armenia has accepted around 30,000 refugees from Syria, the Economist newspaper reported in a story about how they have adapted to life in what many had regarded as the Motherland. Syria had been home to around 90,000 ethnic Armenians before a civil war broke out in 2011.

Armenia to sign EU deal

JUNE 30 2017 (The Bulletin) — Armenia and the EU have completed negotiations over a new Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement and will sign the deal in November, media reported by quoting Armenian foreign minister Eduard Nalbandian. This is the second attempt by Armenia and the EU to sign a Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement. The first, in 2013, failed after Russian pressure on Armenia.

Armenia receives aid for Syrian refugees

JUNE 20 2017 (The Bulletin) — The EU included Armenia in a $300m assistance programme for countries which have taken in refugees from Syria, media reported. In total, Armenia will receive around $3.3m of aid from the EU. It has taken in hundreds of refugees, mainly of Armenian heritage, who had been living in Aleppo. The Balkans, Lebanon, Iraq, Turkey and Jordan all received aid from the EU too.

Armenian Prime Minister wants to stay on

JUNE 21 2017 (The Bulletin) — Armenian PM Karen Karapetyan has hinted that he wants to continue in his job after 2018, the panarmenia.net website reported, when constitutional changes shift power to the PM from the President. Controversy has surrounded the changes as their opponents have alleged that President Serzh Sargsyan, in power since 2008, wants to become PM when his second and final term in office ends in order to secure power. If Mr Karapetyan wants to remain PM it may, potentially, set up a fight for power.

IMF hands out another loan to Armenia

JUNE 24 2017 (The Bulletin) — The IMF released the fifth and final loan of $21.6m to Armenia, media reported, completing a promised $111.6m deal pledged in 2014. It said that Armenia’s economy was set to improve over the next few years after a tough period. It particular, the IMF praised Armenia’s spending prudence.

Tajik President flies to Yerevan

JUNE 14 2017 (The Bulletin) — Tajik president Emomali Rakhmon flew to Yerevan for a state visit, a relatively rare foray into the South Caucasus. At a joint press conference Mr Rakhmon and his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan promises to boost bilateral ties, including setting up a direct flight between the two capitals.

Armenia accuses Azerbaijan

JUNE 16 2017 (The Bulletin) — Armenia-backed forces accused Azerbaijan of killing three of its soldiers in another spike in violence around the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. Tension has really been reduced since fighting in April 2016 killed several dozen people. Analysts have said that there is a greater chance of all-out war over the region now than at any time since a UN- imposed ceasefire in 1994.
